Lisa Mei Norton is a retired Air Force Senior Master Sergeant turned conservative singer/songwriter. She is Co-Founder of BigDawg Music Mafia, a social networking site she and her songmate, "BigDawg” (a retired Marine Corps officer), launched in August 2010 to help showcase conservative, grassroots artists.
While serving in the Air Force as an airborne Russian linguist, Lisa moonlighted as a lead vocalist in various cover bands at military clubs overseas. In 1990, she competed for and was selected to tour with the elite Air Force "Tops in Blue" entertainment troupe, performing as a vocalist/dancer for military families at 138 bases around the globe.
Lisa's passion for music carried on after retiring from the Air Force in the form of political songwriting with her friend BigDawg, beginning with the 2008 elections and continuing on with the advent and rise of the Tea Party movement. She has performed at numerous local, state, and national events over the past couple years. Her music, covering a wide range of genres, focuses on key events that have transpired since the 2008 elections. Her first original Tea Party song, "A Revolution's Brewing," in which her now 7-year old son, Joshua, recites the Preamble to the Constitution, was featured in SPIN Magazine's 25th Anniversary edition in April 2010 with spot-on punditry from rock legend Ted Nugent.
Lisa works full-time as a defense contractor and does all her songwriting, recording, and work promoting BigDawg Music Mafia and its members in her "spare time.”
To this day, she continues to honor the oath she took to "protect and defend the Constitution." While she may have hung up her uniform, she intends to do everything in her power to keep the message of freedom alive -- and her music is now her weapon of choice.
Lisa's debut CD, Enemy Number One -- A Musical Journey Through Hope and Change will soon be available on iTunes, CD Baby, and several other online music distribution outlets.
Lisa resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, Dan, her son, Joshua, and her step-daughters, Brooke and Kelsi.

Pro-American Band Madison Rising Rocks Occupiers’ Open Mic Event
by Lisa Mei NortonWhat happens when a pro-American rock band tries to infiltrate an “Occupy” event and is bold enough to sign up to perform on the event’s Open Mic Sign Up website? When Richard Mgrdechian, President & CEO of Terabit Media Corporation, fellow “Dawger” at BigDawg Music Mafia, and manager for the openly conservative band Madison Rising, told me he had signed them up to perform Jan. 17 at the Occupy Congress rally, my first thought was, “there is no way the organizers are going to allow them to take the stage once they find out who they are.” I was wrong.
As I was making my way to D.C. to meet up with the band for their scheduled free concert at the Capitol Hill Club immediately following their scheduled “Occupy” performance, I spoke with Richard on the phone and was surprised to hear Madison Rising was still listed in the lineup for an on-stage appearance.
I thought to myself, “Oh boy, this is going to get interesting; when these malcontents hear the lyrics to their songs, especially their song Honk if You Want Peace, which mocks the occupiers, they will be booed right off the stage, at a minimum.” Wrong again.
BigDawg Spotlight: ‘Operation Jelly Bean’ – Answering the Call in the ‘Spirit’ of Bipartisanship
by Lisa Mei Norton“You can tell a lot about a fella’s character by whether he picks out all of one color or just grabs a handful.” ~ Ronald Reagan explaining why he liked to have a jar of jelly beans on hand for important meetings.
Our mission at BigDawg Music Mafia is to unite and encourage conservatives with creative abilities to get engaged in the culture revolution – to promote American exceptionalism through the arts. While many of us are using our talents to draw attention to the destruction of liberty by the current administration and those on the far left, there are times when we can use our creativity to bridge that partisan divide, even if only in a light-hearted way. This was one of those times.
Taking a cue from Senators Harry Reid and Chris Dodd who recently visited the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s grave site to channel his bipartisan spirit by pouring whiskey on his grave and reciting a prayer in hopes the Super Committee would reach an agreement on the budget cuts, BigDawg Music Mafia decided to answer their call for bipartisanship in a mission we dubbed “Operation Jelly Bean.”
Having heard radio’s Rush Limbaugh talk about the Super Committee’s failed attempt to reach an agreement and how the two Senators contributed to the process by their visit with Kennedy; and having heard the challenge Limbaugh posed to one of his callers to visit Kennedy’s grave site on his behalf, BigDawg Music Mafia Co-Founder, Andrew (a.k.a. BigDawg) convinced me we needed to take that challenge since the caller indicated she was not local. My friend Reese and I, however, are.
Here’s what Rush asked of one of his callers:
BigDawg Music Mafia Launches ‘Operation Occupy Airwaves’
by Lisa Mei NortonThere are those in the “Lame Stream Media” who claim the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) Movement is no different than the Tea Party Movement. The two could not be any farther apart.
Unlike the highly dysfunctional OWS Movement, which spread like an incurable STD across the country rife with widely disparate, obscure, and incoherent messages (endorsed by the White House and liberal Democrats), and the stench of the masses of unwashed, America-hating, anti-capitalism hippies, great things can and do happen when passionate, talented, pro-America, pro-military, conservative artists join forces to effect positive change to a culture in dire need of some major “transformation.”
That’s exactly what attendees at the recent GOPink Women Working for Change conference observed first-hand when they stopped by the BigDawg Music Mafia booth. Our visitors admired some fabulous artwork from members Richard Gibbs, Kate Barnett, and Frances Byrd, enjoyed some great music we were playing from several member artists, and later attended a great listening party for Madison Rising’s debut CD Madison Rising and FTR (From the Rightr) Radio’s airing of the first-ever weekly top ten countdown of the most requested conservative artists’ songs on our new internet radio show, Culture Warriors & The Fan Jam. Thankfully, it appears the OWS movement is fizzling out.
BigDawg Spotlight: Patriot Hip Hop Artist Nate Smoove Produces ‘Music That Tickles Ya Intellect’
by Lisa Mei NortonFellow Air Force veteran and patriot artist Nathaniel Noble Jr (Nate Smoove) is a fabulously talented and creative song writer and producer who brings his political and spiritual views to life with his poetry set to some serious beats and fantastic music.
The words of his songs best describe him: “Self-assured and aware; passing on the wisdom of a life well-lived; shining a positive light on issues that affect us all; prolific out of a necessity to write about life and address the poignant issues of our ever-changing situations as members of a complex modern society.”
Nate’s bio describes his music as “not a seminar of right and wrong – more so, real thoughts on real issues presented in a musical setting that will make you want to move … a conversation that goes beyond pop culture slang and flavor of the week catch phrases.” His signature block in his email has the phrase “Music That Tickles Ya Intellect.” And that it most certainly does as one fan commented on his guest book:
I find it encouraging when I feel down about what is going on. Music has always been a great stress reliever, and your music is relevant to what is a major stress in life today. Great lyrics and great beats, plus the encouragement for Christians plus some humor, good for me since I take things too seriously lol. Just wanted to say I think you do great work. I hope young people are hearing your message.
As his website tells us to do, “open your heart & mind to the “Life Writer” that is NATE SMOOVE. Clean positive hip-hop mixed with a little Jazz, R & B, Gospel and even a touch of Rock. Forming a unique blend of a musical dish that could only be conjured up by this man from the “WHO DAT NATION” New Orleans.”
I asked Nate what made him decide to write political music. This was his reply:
BigDawg Spotlight: Country/Rock Artist Joe Merrick Teams with Soldiers’ Angels to “Make Sure No Soldier Goes Unloved”
by Lisa Mei NortonWhenever we meet folks who take the time to show their appreciation to our brothers and sisters in uniform for all the sacrifices they have made and continue to make for freedom’s sake, we take an instant liking to them… especially when they turn out to be extraordinarily talented and are using that talent to support our troops.
That is exactly what singer-songwriter-musician and owner of Guilty Dog Studios Joe Merrick is doing.
Fellow BigDawg’er Chris Ross, who we spotlighted a few months back, first introduced us to Joe’s music when he shared the video “Just In Case” at our site. We insisted Chris talk his friend into joining us, and we’re so glad that he did!
When I approached Joe about spotlighting him, I learned that he had donated his great song, “Just In Case,” to Soldiers’ Angels, a nonprofit organization that provides aid and comfort to our military members and their families, for their Pocket Angel initiative. How very cool.
Stand With Gibson Guitars: Rally Planned For Oct. 8
by Lisa Mei NortonSo here we are ten months after the “shellacking” that took place during the November 2010 elections, thanks in large part to the TEA Party movement, and now the left-wing, State-run, “lamestream media” would have you believe the TEA Party is fizzling out – asserting the power of the conservative movement is waning.
Don’t they wish.
On October 8, from 2-4PM, several 9/12, TEA Party, and conservative/patriot organizations will unite in an “unprecedented” show of support for one of this country’s great American companies, Gibson Guitars at a “We Stand With Gibson” rally at the Scoreboard Bar & Grill parking lot in Nashville, TN.
YouTube We Stand With Gibson Rally Promo (Keep Your Hands Off Our Wood)
For those who don’t tune in to Fox News Channel, read conservative blogs, or listen to conservative talk radio, chances are you are not even aware of what happened to Gibson Guitars last month when Federal agents raided their offices and factories in Nashville and Memphis, semi-automatic weapons drawn, clearing out all employees and confiscating guitars, supplies, files, computers, etc.
What was their alleged crime, you ask? Using “illegal” wood in their products. Isn’t it odd how nobody has even been indicted on any charges?
As I discussed in my last BigDawg spotlight piece on fellow BigDawg’er, Nathan Picard, seems the only real “crime” here is Gibson’s CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, is a Republican donor. The feds have basically told Mr. Juszkiewicz that all of this “would go away” if they outsource their jobs to Madagascar. Say what?
Meanwhile, POTUS is making the rounds touting his so-called “jobs bill”…demanding Congress “pass this bill” (90 times in 5 speeches)…. But do keep sending those jobs overseas.
BigDawg Spotlight: Singer/Songwriter Nathan Picard Weighs In On Gibson Guitar Raid
by Lisa Mei NortonWhen the story of last month’s raid on the Gibson Guitar factories and offices in Memphis and Nashville broke, the first thought that hit me was…”Were the drawn weapons really necessary? Is this still America?” Imagine my complete surprise when I learned Gibson’s Chairman and CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, is a staunch Republican who does not bow at the altar of Obama; Gibson is the only major guitar manufacturer in a non-blue (read non-union) state; one of his company’s leading competitors, C.F. Martin & Company, uses the same materials in their products with impunity; and Martin’s CEO, Chris Martin IV, is a long-time Democratic supporter.
Sarcasm off.
This incident has vintage guitar owners left wondering…”What next?” Will the Feds be busting down the doors of musicians, guns drawn, to inspect our guitars to see if we have any contraband they can confiscate? I have a hunch if that were to happen, they’d target musicians who are openly…dare I say…conservative.
And guess where they would start.
It just so happens that our featured artist, conservative singer/songwriter Nathan Picard, makes his own guitars. Here is what he had to say about the latest display of thuggery by this Administration:
Musical Salute to Heroes of 9/11 and the Children Left Behind
by Lisa Mei NortonA couple weeks ago my good friend and gifted songwriter/musician Andrew (BigDawg), Co-Founder of BigDawg Music Mafia, and I were tuned in to “America Akbar” on Radio Jihad Network, a weekly internet radio show hosted by our good friends Gadi Adelman, a counter-terrorism expert, speaker, and author; and his lovely co-host/producer Reese Ccup. During the show, a gentleman named George called in to share some of his thoughts about 9/11 as he was one of the firefighters there that day who lost so many of his brothers when the towers collapsed and is personally suffering from health issues brought on from the Ground Zero toxins.
Reese wanted George to hear a song they often play on their show that Drew and I had written in 2009 called “A Hero’s Creed” – a tribute to all the 9/11 first responders and our military members fighting the war on terror. There was a line in the original version that said “Eight years have passed…no attacks on our land…we owe it to those who heed the call.” Sadly, since the new administration moved into our nation’s capital, we can no longer say that.
We needed to update the song, so we did. Somehow, however, through a slight miscommunication regarding our updating of the song, Gadi was under the impression we were working on a brand new 9/11 tribute song and would have it ready in time for his 9/11 Tribute show on 8 Sep. We knew we had to write a new song for Gadi’s show.
YouTube "Stairs To Heaven" by Lisa Mei Norton & Andrew (BigDawg)

It did not take long for us to come up with the concept for the song: a young girl who lost her father – one of the 343 firefighters who died when the towers collapsed – who is now a young woman looking back with sadness on all that she lost that day and a determination to follow in her Dad’s footsteps and serve her country in uniform…knowing one day she would meet him again.
BigDawg Spotlight: Hot New Patriotic Rock Band ‘Madison Rising’ Salutes ‘Soldiers of America’
by Lisa Mei Norton“They come from the bright light cities…They come from a one horse town…But if they’re coming for you boy…Ya better know they ain’t messin’ around” ~ Madison Rising
As we gather with loved ones this Labor Day weekend to officially bid farewell to another all-too short summer, we should take a moment to remember those who are serving overseas and unable to be with us to enjoy those BBQs, cold beers, pool parties, and such. Here to remind us of their sacrifices, with a brand-spankin’ new rock tribute entitled Soldiers of America, is the very hot new conservative rock band, Madison Rising.
YouTube Madison Rising - "Soldiers of America"
—–
“Madison Rising, named in honor of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States and author of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers, is a new rock band best described as a conservative version of Rage Against The Machine” according to President and CEO of Purple Eagle Entertainment (and fellow BigDawg’er), Richard Mgrdechian, who formed the band. He further states:
The band provides guitar-centric, pro-American rock music to a market completely devoid of anything similar. The band expects to become the face of patriotic rock and roll. Madison Rising is expected to perform at major campaign events, military bases, NASCAR events and other pro-American venues, establishing itself as a major political voice in this country during the 2012 election cycle and beyond. The band’s first single, Soldiers of America, was released on September 1st, 2011 and the album itself will be available on September 30th.
BigDawg Music Mafia is honored to introduce the very talented members of Madison Rising:
BigDawg Patriots Send Message To White House: ‘Get Off the Stage’
by Lisa Mei Norton“Just look at the Old Testament. They didn’t go out with the army first. They sent the musicians out.” ~ Michael W. Smith
One year ago my good friend & songmate, BigDawg, and I decided to launch BigDawg Music Mafia to showcase the many creative ways our fellow patriots are getting engaged in the pop culture revolution, speaking truth to power through their God-given talents (songs, art, blogs, books, photography, poems, radio shows, film, humor, acting, etc).
Today, with 565 members/artists attracting over half a million site hits from around the world in our first year, we have plenty to say and an increasing number of visitors dropping in every day to “hear” us out. With such a diverse group of artists with a wide range of talent, it is only natural that some of us would find ourselves joining forces on some cool collaborations/projects.

Our latest project, Get Off the Stage, written by one of our members who goes by the name “Mick”, is described in an electronic press kit he recently released and distributed. Here are some excerpts:
BigDawg Spotlight On: American Folk Blues Artist James Kole
by Lisa Mei NortonWe are often asked why we emphasize the fact that we promote conservative artists at BigDawg Music Mafia instead of encouraging artists to join and share non-political content and promoting them as artists period. Our answer is always the same. That is our mission — to showcase conservative artists who want to make a difference. If not us, who? If not now, when?
Just as the anti-war artists of the 60’s expressed their political views through music, so too are an increasing number of artists of the TEA Party movement who refuse to keep silent about the destruction of this great nation by many who ironically subscribed to those radical, anti-government views of the 60’s counterculture movement.
One such patriot artist, whose musical style is reminiscent of the folk music of the 60’s, but with a contemporary blues/rock twist, is American Folk Blues artist James Kole.
We have been fans of James Kole’s for over two years since first stumbling upon his YouTube channel, impressed not only by his positive, pro-America lyrics, but also by his professionally produced videos, unique musical and vocal style, and his captivating delivery.
James is no newcomer to patriotic-infused songwriting promoting individual liberty and love of country. His 1998 full-length release, Liberty, offered listeners a glimpse of what was to come over the years and culminate into his 7th full-length album (released July 4th, 2010): Songs For Freedom in which he sings about the American Revolution, Frederick Douglass, the Constitution, U.S. Sovereignty, current uncertain times, and much more.
BigDawg Spotlight: Bobby Powers and Party Time Tell D.C. ‘Take Your Hands Out of Our Pockets’
by Lisa Mei NortonWith the impending August 2nd debt ceiling “deadline” drawing near (which just so happens to be two days prior to a certain somebody in D.C.’s big Five-Oh birthday bash) and all the wheeling and dealing going on inside the Beltway, President Obama tells us it’s time to “pull off the band-aid” and “eat our peas.”
Mr. President, Bobby Powers and Party Time have a message for you and the rest of your fellow “Cleptocrats” in D.C.:
—–
Now THAT is how you deliver a message since it appears emails, phone calls, faxes, office visits, and…oh…a million-plus sign-bearing, flag-waving patriots descending upon the Nation’s Capitol don’t work.
I just love these guys!
Bobby Powers stumbled across my YouTube page over a year ago and introduced himself via email. Naturally I checked out his site and instantly became a fan when I heard their song Take Your Hands Out of Our Pockets. Since that day, I have had the great privilege of sharing the stage with Bobby and the rest of the Party Time gang (Robin Gordon, Tony Rook, and Michael Marino) after our first meeting on the National Mall at the 2010 Tax Day TEA Party. BigDawg Spotlight On: Folk/Country/Americana Artist Chip Murray – ‘From A Whisper To A Shout’
by Lisa Mei NortonWhen we find ourselves in difficult times, it is easy for us to lose hope…to wonder “why?”…to want to give up the fight. But every now and then, when we least expect it, God shows up in a big way to let us know He is with us and is in control…always…and I am reminded of these lyrics from the song “Praise You In This Storm” by Casting Crowns: “…as the thunder rolls, I barely hear You whisper through the rain, ‘I’m with you’…”
On the morning of 1 July 2011…that “whisper became a shout.”
What started out as a regular weekly spotlight on one of our great culture warriors at BigDawg Music Mafia – this time on the amazing music of our good friend Chip Murray, a truly gifted singer/songwriter who also happens to be a delightful, down-to-earth blogger – has turned out to be so much more. We are reminded not only of God’s incredible Grace, but we are also reminded of the sacrifices of our fallen brothers and sisters that enable us to celebrate our freedom. May this story–Chip’s story–lift your spirits and give you hope.
It is a pleasure and an honor to introduce our friend, Chip Murray.
Chip’s Biography:
Chip got his first guitar (a Stella) at the tender age of 13. It may have been a cheap guitar, but he quickly found it to be a great tool of expression and a very cool way to connect with people. Growing up in the turbulent 60’s, the guitar became his life raft and steady friend through the whitewaters of adolescence…. And while the rest of the world seemed to be finding themselves, making their marks and staking their claims, he was tasting the silent sweetness of nowhere. And yet, by 35 he had lived everywhere from Boulder to Reseda, to Morgan City and the Houston suburb of Bacliff. He lived, worked, loved, fought, and danced with “the people” on every coast of this great land. He became one of them, assimilating their culture by inhaling their music and stories into his heart and soul… “Gone Wishin‘,” the debut CD from his band Cavern was his first public “exhale” and but a glimpse of what’s inside. From “Devil in Me” to “Deja Vu Blues,” Gone Wishin’ is a metaphor for our journey from the darkness to the light….and after “we rest on the wind, we’ll come right back to our mothers again.”- Gibran. BigDawg Spotlight: Patriot Rocker Jeremy Dodge Tells Us to ‘Stand Up’
by Lisa Mei NortonAnyone who thinks conservatives can’t rock it out has clearly not come across Jeremy Dodge – a conservative activist with attitude and an abundance of talent. When Jeremy first joined BigDawg Music Mafia and shared his Tea Party hit I Am American and Stand Up, the fans couldn’t get enough. The demand from fans for more has Jeremy back in the studio as we “speak” working on some new songs which will, no doubt, be every bit as kickin’ as his others.
—–
As with the majority of the conservative artists in the Tea Party movement, Jeremy has been traveling around the country performing on his own dime and as many fellow musicians know, studio time costs a pretty penny. Jeremy has set up a project page where fans can participate in the production of his new songs by helping defray some of his costs, getting a few “thank you” goodies in return, and even a shout-out in his video.
Here’s what Jeremy has to say about how he got started in music and how he ended up using his talents to wake his fellow Americans up:
For as long as I can remember I have had a passion and love for music. It all started when my dad took me to my first rock concert when I was just 4 years old. Growing up, my parents were later divorced and I lived with my mom who always did her best to raise me in a Godly home. As I came into my teenage years, I became very involved in my church, but when high school hit, I decided to go my own way and pursue my dream of becoming a musician. After several hard years of trying to “make it” I ended up broke, depressed and homeless. Eventually I moved home and after many months of making wrong choices and one late night of partying, I laid on my bed and thought, “there’s got to be more to this life!” I prayed the most ugly prayer in history and told God if He was real, I needed to know. I passed out and woke up completely sober. Completely. I had no desire for any substance at all.
BigDawg Spotlight On: Country Artist Sherry Marquelle Fights ‘Like A Girl’
by Lisa Mei NortonOver the past few years, the Tea Party movement has seen a dramatic rise in the number of conservative female activists across this country. From local to State and National elections, we see more and more female names on ballots. We see women leading many of the conservative social networking sites – large and small. We see them writing conservative books, blogging, tweeting, facebooking (has Webster added those yet as actual verbs?). We see them on TV providing spot-on punditry on the shenanigans in DC. We see them holding voter registration drives. We see them courageously and passionately speaking out at Town Hall meetings, Tea Parties, rallies, and conventions. We also see them using their creative abilities (e.g. music, art, writing, acting, film making, etc.) to spread the message of freedom. We see them boldly fighting for this country in many capacities, all the while brushing off (and many even relishing) the insults flung at them for simply being conservative and…gasp…FEMALE! And they are HOT (as in…”mad as Hell and not going to take it any more”…yeah).
It appears one must “fight like a girl” to save this country.
Especially proud to be one of those lipstick warriors is country singer/songwriter, Sherry Marquelle, whose ancestors, the Apache people, due to their fierce independence, were the last of the Native Americans to be placed on reservations. That strong will is alive today and stands ready for a good fight for freedom and that fighting spirit is very evident in Ms. Marquelle.
Sherry is not new to the entertainment industry. She has shared the stage with Faron Young, Mel McDaniel, and John Conley. She has recorded songs from some of Nashville’s top songwriters, such as Harlan Howard (I Fall To Pieces, I Got A Tiger By The Tail, Somebody Should Leave), Hank Cochran (Make The World Go Away, The Chair, Ocean Front Property), and Angela Kaset (Independence Day).
Sherry says she is now using her singing and writing talents “to inspire fellow Americans to get involved in the efforts to stand up for our country and uphold the Constitution.” (more…)
‘The Undefeated’ Review: ‘By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them’
by Lisa Mei NortonSarah Palin IS The Undefeated.
By the time you finish watching this superbly scripted and produced two-hour documentary about the former Alaskan Governor, if you don’t come to that conclusion, you were either asleep during the film or you still believe that “Community Organizer” trumps true executive experience and success as qualification to serve as America’s Commander-In-Chief.
Dim the house lights…

It is 2008 and Republican Presidential candidate John McCain introduces Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate to a crowd of thousands of enthusiastic supporters. The beautiful, poised, confident Governor takes the stage at the Republican National Convention to thunderous applause and delivers an electrifying speech with a level of charisma, wit, and passion not seen since Ronald Reagan, that catapulted this relatively unknown Alaskan Governor onto the National political stage making her almost instantly and simultaneously one of the most revered and one of the most reviled politicians in recent memory.
In stark contrast, the film then cuts over to a dramatic 3-minute montage of pure, unadulterated hatred from the left for this VP candidate which history will record as one of the most vicious campaigns to annihilate a public figure. It was vulgar. It was brutal. It was violent. It was main stream. It was textbook Alinsky. And yet, she is still standing…undefeated.
BigDawg Spotlight On: ‘the IN word’ – The Antidote to Liberal Arts & Political Correctness
by Lisa Mei NortonNeed a break from all the bad news saturating our airwaves, printed news, and cyberspace about the sad state of affairs we face as a Nation? Tired of all the political correctness and leftist group-think disguised as “art” being foisted upon us by the left? Fed up with the elitist Hollywood liberals’ unabashed hatred for all-things-conservative as so brilliantly exposed in Ben Shapiro’s explosive new best-seller “Primetime Propaganda”?
You’re not alone.
With the advent of do-it-yourself internet radio shows and webcasts, the number of grassroots, conservative talk show hosts augmenting the daily news stories covered by conservative kingpins like El Rushbo and The Great One is growing exponentially. These citizen activists are effectively using new media venues to circumvent the barrage of liberal propaganda spewed by today’s so-called ‘journOlists’ and Hollywood celebs.
What is noticeably missing, however, are radio shows and webcasts that focus primarily on conservative pop culture. Most, if not all, of the internet shows provide the hosts’ commentary on current news and politics because, like it or not, it’s what’s on most everyone’s minds these days. But what do we conservatives have right now that is just for entertainment that is NOT laced with the ill-informed, anti-American ideology of the left? Not much, if anything…
Until now.
BigDawg Spotlight On: Grammy-Winning Singer/Songwriter James Hooker
by Lisa Mei NortonIn honor of Memorial Day, I thought we’d to try something a little different for this week’s spotlight. I wanted to feature an artist who has written some great songs that pay tribute to our fallen heroes. As luck would have it, one of our site members, Sibella Giorello, an accomplished author who has published several books (and whose first-rate journalism has garnered national awards, including two nominations for the Pulitzer Prize), contacted me a few weeks back telling me she had recently conducted an interview with this week’s featured artist. I read her wonderful write-up, thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the man behind the music, and wanted to share of few highlights from her interview. You can read the full version at BigDawg Music Mafia. It is my great honor and privilege to introduce Mr. James Hooker…
—-
Listen to this song. Listen to it. If this song doesn’t crack your heart wide open — especially on Memorial Day weekend — don’t worry about Obamacare; you’re already dead.
I first caught James Hooker’s “Hanging Out With the Boys” on Big Dawg Music Mafia when the tune was on the BigDawg Jukebox. But by the final chorus I’d downloaded the entire album and felt like some IED had just gone off. An Incendiary Ear Device that blew my mind.
“Hanging Out With the Boys” album had everything from blues to ballads to bagpipes. A soulful heart, yet not sad. Patriotic but not corny. And beyond all that, it managed to be absolutely unabashed in its support for our men and women in uniform.
After days of listening to it, I wrote singer/songwriter James Hooker a thank-you note.
But musicians are a funny breed. That innate sense of timing that makes them hit the right riffs on stage also shows up in conversations. For instance, Hooker’s reply to my letter. I told him my blues-musician husband thought his voice sounded like a cross between Leon Redbone and Leon Russell.
Hooker’s reply?
“Just so long as he doesn’t say Leon Panetta.”
BigDawg Spotlight On: Urban Funk Rocker Toots Sweet – ‘A Conservative Sound in a Liberal Town’
by Lisa Mei NortonA few months ago, I noticed that we had a new artist at our site (BigDawg Music Mafia) named Toots Sweet from New York, New York. My first thought was, “Wow…a conservative musician from ‘America’s most liberal city,’ with a cool name. Can’t wait to see what he brings to the table.’”
It usually takes our new members a few days to figure out how to navigate their way around our site (hosted on the NING platform), so I went about my business and made a mental note to check back in a day or two.
My good friend/songmate/partner-in-crime, Drew (a.k.a. BigDawg), sent an email to me saying, “You have got to check out this new guy, Toots Sweet…he’s great!”
So I did…and I smiled…big.
We have such a wide range of musical genres at our site, but this man is a true original with a great message and a cool vibe. His tribute to our troops, “Soldier Boy,” is one of my favorites. (more…)
Filmmakers Kickstart Documentary ‘Healing Waters’ Featuring ‘Life Saving’ Wounded Warrior Program
by Lisa Mei NortonAs Memorial Day weekend approaches and we make plans to celebrate with family and friends, there are so many who will not be celebrating. They will, instead, be visiting Arlington Cemetery and hundreds of other cemeteries across the country where their loved ones, who paid the ultimate price for our freedom, have been laid to rest.
And then there are the “lucky ones” who made it home.

Some homecoming. They returned to a country that is struggling with sky-rocketing fuel and food prices, out-of-control government spending, record deficits, high unemployment rates, record home foreclosures, businesses going under, and the ever-increasing government intrusion into our private lives. These heroes, our wounded active duty military members and veterans, have the added struggle of trying to muster the will and courage to press on with their lives as they suffer in silence not only from their physical impairments but from the never-ending nightmares, anger, loneliness, guilt, depression, and a number of other gut-wrenching emotions — all of which are triggered by and attributed to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Thankfully, there are caring organizations that understand what our battle-scarred warriors are going through and are actively engaged in helping them begin the healing process. One such organization is Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc (PHWFFI).
